New York (AP) The New York Giants are making a major trade to land a quarterback, the oldest player in the NFL.
The Giants have traded Pierre Garfon to the Atlanta Falcons in exchange for a third-rounder and a 2018 sixth-round draft pick, according to sources with knowledge of the trade.
The deal is subject to NFL approval.
The deal would be the first major blockbuster since the end of the 2017 season when the Falcons signed Garfons brother, Brandon, to a one-year deal worth $1.5 million.
Garfon, a first-round quarterback in the 2008 draft, led the Giants to a 10-6 record in 2018.
He started every game in the season finale, throwing a career-high 34 touchdowns and no interceptions in a win over the Buffalo Bills.
The 49ers traded up to select him in the first round.
The Jaguars, the team that selected Garfson in 2008, selected him in this year’s draft.
The Giants were able to sign Garfoni, 36, to an extension in 2018 that carries an $11 million salary cap hit for 2019.
The team is in the market for a franchise quarterback.
The Falcons have been in pursuit of Garfino since trading up to acquire him in 2015.
The Falcons’ decision to move up in the draft and select Garfini came after general manager Thomas Dimitroff told NFL Network he expected Garfaldi to be the franchise quarterback in Atlanta, where the franchise had won four Super Bowls.
The move was met with a wave of derision on Twitter.ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported Thursday that Garfinos brother Brandon, who played quarterback in college, was not in favor of the Garfins decision to make a trade.
“I’ve never heard of him, and I don’t think he is a guy I would like to be in a situation where you have to make some decisions that are based on somebody’s own feelings and what they think about a player,” Brandon Garfione told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
“And I know the quarterback position in the league is not the most glamorous job in the world.
I don, too, think it would be an ideal situation for him, but I do think that a lot of people will see the situation differently, and that’s what makes this such a good move.”
The Falcons, who have the No. 6 pick in next month’s draft, are expected to make their decision on Garfison on Friday.
