When Hannah sings about her time at a car wash in her new album, Exotism, she’s talking about the process of getting her hands dirty.
The album title, which includes lyrics that reference the process, was inspired by the car washing industry and its high rates of breast cancer.
Singery says she was approached by a woman who wanted to hire her to clean her own car, and the two bonded over their shared experiences of the industry.
Singers Hannah Singers, Hannah and Hannah Singing star in the HBO show Exoticasts, which follows the lives of musicians and their relationships with the industry in an attempt to reveal the unseen realities of celebrity.
Singing about the car was a way of bringing the experience of car washing to life, she says.
“When I was at the carwash, I was thinking, this is what I want to do, and I was actually going to do it, and that’s when I started thinking about it.
It was the beginning of a journey.”
Singery has since been doing carwash work professionally for nearly two years.
She said she was motivated by the high rates and the lack of transparency around car wash workers’ wages, health insurance and health care, which she said was often not available to female workers.
Singer said she’s now doing her own health care for the first time and has to take her own medication.
“If it wasn’t for that experience, I wouldn’t be doing it,” she said.
Singering said she believes her story can inspire other women to work in the industry, saying that it’s important for young women to see how much work goes into getting a good car wash job.
“I feel like it’s not just for women, but it’s for all of us, and this is the way I want my life to be,” Singery said.
